How do I start Freelancing?

Before starting freelancing, you will need to have the right mindset. Freelancing is an actual career and it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you are aiming to earn a lot in the beginning and if you feel that you will quit if you don’t, then I’m afraid it is not for you.

For starters, you have to first read about it, or join freelancing groups that are dedicated to helping fellow freelancers in their field. Next, is to create an online profile in the form of a blog or a profile in a freelancing platform.

Can I really earn a lot?

Yes. You can earn a lot in freelancing. It is a very lucrative career, but only to those who know how to work smart and not harder. In freelancing, you are in complete control of your earnings. If you want more, you can always entertain more clients, if you are contented then you can retain the clients that you have.

How did you get your first ever freelance client?

When I started, I created profiles on every platform I found. In the beginning, I used to juggle all of them until eventually, I let go of the ones that I haven’t used. As days went by, I was left with Elance, Odesk, Guru, and My first client is from Elance, I wrote 3000 words on every topic he gave me.

What platform do you usually use? What do you suggest?

I have direct clients now for my personal projects, but for Do It Write Solutions, my writing group, we use Upwork. I always suggest Upwork for beginners, because they have Escrow for payments that can serve as a protection for you and for your client. It can also serve as a starting point for all freelancers. It can serve as an online portfolio that you can use to get direct clients eventually.

What do I need so I can receive payments?

The basic is a bank account. You can connect your bank account to your Upwork account. When you start getting direct clients, then you can consider creating a PayPal account. I use Paypal for Upwork and direct clients. My bank account is connected to my PayPal account and I can withdraw to my BPI with P150 fee. Or you can also find a legit encasher that can send your money to your bank just seconds after you send your PayPal funds to them.
